Biden news live: President calls for gun control after shootings in Boulder and Atlanta

Biden calls for a gun check after the mass shooting in Boulder

President Joe Biden has urged the House and Senate to act and “take sensible steps that will save lives” following a second mass shooting within a week on charges of using migrants as “political farmers”.

Monday’s Boulder rampage that killed 10 people comes just a week after eight people were shot dead in Atlanta.

The violent attacks have plunged the president into the country’s hotly contested arms law debate, with reforms often met with significant political setbacks.

“I don’t have to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take sensible steps that will save lives in the future and to get my colleagues in the House and Senate to act,” Biden said Tuesday.

Last year, the Trump administration ordered thousands of migrants to be detained at the border into Mexico, citing concerns about the coronavirus, despite critics claiming they have legal asylum rights.

The Republican Senator’s gun control analogy has been labeled “stupid”.

Senator John Kennedy, who represents Louisiana, told a Senate judicial committee Tuesday, “We have a lot of drunk drivers in America who are killing a lot of people. We should try to fight that too. “

He added, “The answer is not to get rid of all sober drivers. The answer is to focus on the problem. “

CNN’s Jake Tapper briefed Mr Kennedy’s observation on Tuesday. He said, “I mean, I don’t even know what to say about it, it’s so stupid.” The station’s senior political correspondent Abby Phillip agreed that this was “not a good analogy.”

What’s on Joe Biden’s agenda today?

President Biden will be welcoming members of the US women’s soccer team to the White House on Equal Pay Day.

Women in the US make an average of 82 cents for every dollar made by men, with the difference being even bigger when it is calculated for black women who make 63 cents for the dollar and Latina women who make only 55 cents.

Megan Rapinoe and teammate Margaret Purce, both from the squad that won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019, will be attending the White House to mark “Equal Pay Day,” when US women average up to one new Years of work have to earn what the average man earned in the previous year.

Jennifer Klein, co-chair of the newly established Gender Policy Council of the White House, said, “You are heroines because you stand up for this issue for all women. That really is true in literally every country in the world, women are paid less. “

Nearly half of the country’s elementary schools are open to full-time education, according to a new survey

Almost half of the country’s elementary schools were open to full-time classes last month, but the proportion of students studying in person varied widely by region and race, a new survey by the Biden administration shows.

Among fourth-graders enrolled schools, 47% offered full-time classes in February, while that of eighth-graders enrolled 46%.

Overall, according to the survey, around 76% of elementary and middle schools were open to face-to-face or hybrid learning, while 24% only offered distance learning.

However, there were wide variations in where students lived, reflecting the regional struggles that took place in the cities discussing how and when schools should reopen.

In another example of the uneven impact of the pandemic, the survey found notable differences in student race.

Among fourth graders, nearly half of white students studied entirely in person, with just over a quarter studying online. In contrast, nearly 60% of Black and Hispanic students studied completely remotely.

The difference was even greater among students of Asian descent: 68% were remote and only 15% attended fully in person.

Lawyers visiting migrant children said Trump’s border closure had turned youth into “political farmers”.

Donald Trump’s policies on the border helped turn migrants into “political farmers,” say lawyers who visited unaccompanied children at a facility in Texas.

Last year, the Trump administration ordered thousands of migrants to be detained at the border into Mexico, citing concerns about the coronavirus, despite critics claiming they have legal asylum rights.

Melissa Adamson told The Independent that poor conditions in migrant facilities that host children are “a direct consequence of what happens when children’s lives are used as political farmers”.
