The Chinese embassy in the US said its Twitter account was hacked after retweeted an unsubstantiated claim by President Donald Trump that Democrats cheated in the election.
“If someone cheated in the election, which the Democrats did, why shouldn’t the election be overturned immediately? How can a country be run like this?” Trump tweeted on Wednesday with no evidence.
The Chinese embassy then retweeted it in a moment captured by a Reuters reporter.
The Chinese embassy claims it was hacked and did not retweet anything on Wednesday.
Twitter had put a label on Trump’s first tweet that read, “This election fraud claim is controversial.”
The social media company has tagged tweets to prevent the spread of misleading information. Trump’s tweets have been given various labels several times.
The US president has made repeated unsubstantiated allegations of election and election fraud since losing the election to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden last month.
On Wednesday, Trump filed a motion to join Ken Paxton’s long-term efforts to have the Supreme Court effectively undo Biden’s victory.
