CTK Bio Canada develops bioplastic resin for degradation in soil and sea water


The company is currently conducting detailed experimental trials with academic partners to further improve and validate its technology ahead of the expected commercial rollout in 2022. A provisional patent has now been applied for.

Over 360 million tons of plastic waste are now produced annually, only 9% of which is recycled. According to current estimates, the plastic mass in the oceans will equal the mass of all fish species by 2050. This ecological disaster is an urgent problem and CTK Bio Canada is committed to replacing conventional plastic for packaging with a safer and more sustainable alternative.

Bioplastics currently only make up 1% of global plastic production, and much of it requires special composting facilities to break down. High cost, problems with mechanical properties, and poor long-term stability have also limited the wider commercial uptake of bioplastics.

Now CTK Bio Canada believes it has found a solution. Founded by JK Park and Daniel Shum, the company is the new Canadian subsidiary of Korean cosmetics giant CTK Cosmetics (“CTK”). To reduce the ecological footprint, CTK has invested heavily in the research of the Canadian team.

Park and Shum developed their technology in collaboration with Profs. Zachary Hudson and Emily Cranston, experts in plant-based materials technology at the University of British Columbia. Hudson holds the Canadian Research Chair in Sustainable Chemistry and Cranston is currently the President’s Chair of Excellence for Forest Products. After the formulation was developed, prototyping began with the Polymer Materials and Manufacturing group at McMaster University. CTK Bio Canada materials are designed to not only disintegrate when disposed of in the green container, but also when they enter the environment. The materials should only decompose into non-toxic by-products while remaining compatible with equipment used to make traditional plastics.

Most importantly, the team believes they can achieve these milestones in materials science while keeping costs competitive with petroleum-based plastics. The first prototyping for a number of plastic parts and films has already been completed. Detailed tests are planned until 2021 to check the degradability of the material. The company has also published a whitepaper on its website that describes the formulation and design in more detail. CTK Bio Canada intends to commercialize its innovation from 2022.
