This is what our newest European team of the week looks like:

GK: Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa)

He scored among his seven brilliant saves that led to a goal against the Wolves. Two particularly noticeable stops came against Daniel Podence and then against Leander Dendoncker.

RB: Silas Wamangituka (Stuttgart)

Scored two goals in an impressive 5-1 win at Borussia Dortmund that cost Lucien Favre his job. He turned the opener on the spot before showing up in the box to score his seventh goal of the season. Also well intercepted and played for the fourth time in Tanguy Coulibaly.

CB: Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham)

Leeds United put in a tough test and Ogbonna came through with flying colors. He was a stone on the back, registered nine clearances at game level and even towered over everyone to perform a header for the winner.

CB: Jules Kounde (Seville)

Koundes 109 passes against Getafe were the most passes of all players. His distribution was key to their build-up game and he even managed to make an important release from the line.

LB: Theo Hernandez (AC Milan)

Had a great run in the first half that resulted in a cut for an offside goal. With Milan going 2-0 down in the second half, he cut the deficit in half by walking home from a corner. The left-back then saved an injury-time draw with a late hit to maintain the undefeated streak of the league leaders.

CM: James Maddison (Leicester City)

Fully fit now and looking sharp against Brighton which combined well with Jamie Vardy. He scored twice, with his second being an absolute goalscorer. He pushed it onto his left foot and rolled it to the top corner.

CM: Eduardo Camavinga (Rennes)

Still growing in stature in Rennes. He dominated midfield and dictated the game with his pass in the 1-0 win in Nice. His defensive contribution was immense with seven tackles.

CM: Nicolo Barella (Inter)

Has shown great work ethic throughout the game and made a comeback when Inter beat Cagliari 3-1. He hit with a breathtaking volley and supported him with impeccable precision.

FW: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

Barcelona only managed a 1-0 win over Levante but Messi’s efforts might deserve more. He bombed the opposition with 12 shots and was a constant threat by making three important passports. Every attack move seemed to go through him and it was fitting that he scored the only goal in the encounter.

FW: Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus)

I saw a great header that was thwarted at the back post on a difficult excursion. In his 100th appearance for Juventus, however, he was not disputed and got a brace with two expertly hit penalties.

FW: Lozano (Napoli) rent

Huge impact from the bench as he inspired Napoli to a comeback win. He headed Dries Mertens’ cross to equalize and even hit the post with an early shot that surprised the defense. He finally came down the flank and delivered a nice flank for the winner.
