Google plans to spend more than $ 7 billion on real estate in the US in 2021 as spending resumes after the Covid-19 pandemic.
The company said the money will be used to expand offices and data centers in 19 states to create at least 10,000 full-time positions. 1 billion US dollars flow specifically in California.
“The personal gathering to work together and to build a community is a central part of the Google culture and will continue to be an important part of our future,” said CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post on Thursday. “As a result, we are continuing to invest heavily in our offices across the country as well as in our home state of California, where we will be investing over $ 1 billion this year.”
Google parent company Alphabet suspended its real estate spending last year after the pandemic and Google’s first year-over-year revenue decline in the second quarter of last year.
The data center expansion occurs when the company aggressively expands its cloud business. The company released operating results for this business in its latest earnings report, finding that it lost $ 5.61 billion on sales of $ 13.06 billion last year. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian told investors last month that his focus is now on growing the business with a view to future profitability.
The company plans to bring employees back to the offices in the fall. Pichai previously said Google would not adopt a permanent remote work schedule as most employees are expected to be in assigned offices three days a week from September onwards.
As part of the expansion, Pichai said the company will add thousands of new features to its offices in Atlanta, Washington, DC, Chicago and New York.
“This will help create more jobs and investment for diverse communities as part of our previously announced racial equality commitments,” Pichai said, adding that 2020 was the biggest year Black and Latinx employees have been in Google USA were discontinued
The company plans to open new offices in Seattle, Houston and Mississippi. It is in the process of planning several massive groundbreaking developments in various cities, including near its headquarters in Mountain View, California, where residential homes are being built.
