A cat with more than 30,000 Instagram followers was killed in an alleged attack on its owner and Instagram chef Chanan Aksornnan.
Ms. Askornnan, known as “Chef Bao Bao,” took her boyfriend out for a walk in McCarren Park, Brooklyn with Ponzu and four other pets on April 4.
A boy stumbled on Ponzu’s leash and then pulled on it, according to a report by Facebook user ChaRee Pim about the incident.
The cat was dragged along on a leash and “high … in the air”, pulling out its claws with force – and bleeding, wrote Ms. Pim in Thai.
An argument ensued in which Ms. Askornnan confronted the boy’s family and asked, “What have you just done?”
A woman who is believed to be the boy’s mother replied by saying, “You have that when you go for a walk with your cat, b ****”.
Ms. Askornnan and her boyfriend and two other pets were attacked by the family. The video of the incident appears to confirm the attack.
“The family has not only offered no apology or remorse,” she told the online news agency Green Doton Monday. “They immediately started verbal abuse that escalated into physical assault. I was hit and kicked by three women.”
Ms. Askornnan’s friend, who remains anonymous, suffered a broken nose that had to be operated on, according to the Instagram chef.
In an Instagram post on April 7th, she wrote that the cat had died of “shock and injuries” after the incident. It reportedly suffered from heart disease.
She continued, “We are traumatized, speechless and heartbroken. Our family was physically assaulted that day and a police investigation is pending to find and prosecute the perpetrators who showed no compassion for animals or people. “
A number of Ponzu and Chef Bao Bao fans took to Twitter demanding arrests in the incident – and the latest in a string of attacks against Americans from Asia.
“Ponzu was diagnosed with heart disease and befriended Mango the parrot,” he wrote Ines Helene. “They and their brother Tofu were adopted by an Asian family. Ponzo and his family were attacked in the park in what appeared to be an anti-Asian hate crime. Ponzo died. “
