Macy’s (M) store closings in 2021: Here is the full list

Macy’s closes dozen of Department stores this year to get out of underperforming malls and build a real estate empire that isn’t as valued as it used to be.

The liquidation sale has already started at some locations that are closing. The rest is slated to begin this month. (For a full list of closing stores and recently closed locations, see below.) In 2020, Macy’s closed around 30 locations.

The Macy’s closings will add to the spate of retail properties that have come back to the market in recent years and are beating up landlords. In 2020, retailers, from boutique clothing chains to department store operators, announced more than 11,000 closings, according to real estate company CoStar Group.

Mall owners like Simon Property Group and Macerich were hired to fill a variety of empty spaces. The pressure was too much for some: two shopping center owners – CBL and Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust – filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November.

Macy’s currently operates 544 of its eponymous department stores as well as 34 Bloomingdale stores, 19 Bloomingdale stores and 166 Bluemercury stores.
