Man who allegedly had Covid symptoms dies after fleeing Florida

United Airlines was asked to forward passenger information to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after a man who reportedly had coronavirus-like symptoms died shortly after traveling on one of its flights.

A flight from Orlando, Florida to New Orleans was diverted to New Orleans on Monday when a man on board experienced a medical emergency. According to the airline, the man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

After the death, the CDC asked the airline to provide information about passengers and crew for contact tracing, United spokesman Charles Hobart said.

The man’s wife reportedly told a paramedic that he had shown symptoms of the disease, including loss of taste and smell.

United determined that the agency unspecified the man’s cause of death, and United doesn’t know if it was Covid-19.

Before the flight, the man had filled out a form to say that he had not tested positive for the disease or had symptoms of the coronavirus.

“It is evident that the passenger mistakenly acknowledged this requirement,” United said.

A woman who said on Twitter that she overheard the man’s wife who said he had the virus did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment.

The CDC is collecting information to decide whether further public health measures are appropriate, an agency spokesman said.

“In order to protect the privacy of the individual, we do not make this information available to the public.”

The four flight attendants on the plane were quarantined for two weeks after arriving in Los Angeles, “according to written guidelines,” said Taylor Garland, spokesman for the Association of Flight Attendants.

“Our union continues to support the occupation,” said Ms. Garland. “We urge passengers to adhere to the Covid airline guidelines and stay home when they are sick.”

Hobart said the airline was originally told that the man had died of heart disease and that passengers had been given the option to stay on the plane or take a later flight, and that all passengers had stayed on the plane.
