Manchester City’s initiative returns to get more girls to play football

Following the success of #SameGoals since its inception in 2018 – which has seen over 4,000 girls around the world to date – Manchester City has announced the return of the initiative for the fourth time.

With the aim of inspiring the next generation of female soccer players, #SameGoals is committed to every girl who shows a video showing a goal, achieving or saving a goal in order to increase her passion and focus on achieving it to focus on making a special limited edition soccer ball from PUMA available to their dreams.

In addition to the social media movement that was the focus of the event, the City Football Schools have held special coaching clinics for young girls in the United Arab Emirates over the past few years as part of the campaign.

As part of the 2021 campaign, which includes the virtual world of last year amid the coronavirus pandemic, Manchester City is hosting a series of free online workshops on women’s football with a variety of professionals from across the club.

The series will cover business and management perspectives as well as coaching and technical tips, including head coach Gareth Taylor, managing director Gavin Makel, first team players Caroline Weir, Esme Morgan and Sam Mewisoffer their support among other things.

In addition, there will be a workshop with PUMA where attendees will learn more about the growth of sportswear brands that are at the heart of the campaign.

With limited capacity, the workshops are aimed at anyone interested in the football industry or the popular game, depending on availability, as City continues its promise and commitment to expand the game.

Also new for 2021 is that everyone who takes part in the #SameGoals campaign will have access to competitions where seven teams can win a personalized Ultimate PUMA Team Bundle team package with complete kits, soccer balls, equipment and bibs.

Before joining the initiative, Manchester City and Scotland midfielder Caroline Weir said: “I am very much looking forward to being part of the initiative and workshops. It was really exciting to see #SameGoals grow so far from year to year.

“The players who held the soccer clinics last year were overwhelmed by the response and while we won’t be able to do things personally as usual this year, it is as important to continue the growth of #SameGoals as is we can do it in these unprecedented cases.

“Staying fit and motivated has never been more important than last year – it was just amazing that so many young girls have gotten involved in the past three years, but I know there is a lot more out there, and we would do it i love to join you.

“I was in the position of these young girls who wanted to play football and the #SameGoals campaign really shows how much Manchester City cares about improving the women’s game from the grassroots.”

Gavin Makel, General Manager of Manchester City Women, added: “Increasing grassroots participation and encouraging young girls to have their first experience of football is something that is very important to us as a club.

“The #SameGoals campaign is a great example of this as it has worked with thousands of people around the world over the past four years.

“Being able to see and hear some of the inspiring stories about #SameGoals is something we are very proud of as we want to make meaningful impact not only on individuals but also local communities.”
