Mining giants accused of “serious human rights abuses” and “devastating environmental pollution” in the Colombian mine

In the Cerrejón mine in Colombia – one of the largest open-cast mines in the world – three international mining giants are to be investigated for alleged “serious human rights violations” and “devastating environmental pollution”.

Glencore, BHP and Anglo American jointly operate the mine. Ireland’s state-owned energy company ESB is also under investigation as part of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) – an intergovernmental economic organization with 37 member countries – following complaints filed in Australia, Ireland. Switzerland and Great Britain from the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN).

The action was supported by a coalition of Colombian, Irish and international human rights and environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
