The Red Bull athletes Horacio Llorens and Rafael Goberna took part in an exclusive one-time stunt over the breathtaking palm fountain in the Pointe, Palm Jumeirah.
The performance will now be shown in a new Red Bull TV short film The Breaking PointeLlorens and Goberna wore special parameters to slide between the jets of water from Palm Fountain, which was recently named the largest fountain exhibition in the world.
In the film, the athletes – together with a large team of specialists – show what it takes to plan such a stunt. The audience sees the pre-event training, the engineering as well as intensive training units and the practice of choreography.
“As soon as we had the opportunity, we wanted to fly there,” explains the pro-paragliding pilot Llorens. “The ultimate challenge is that we flew in the night, which means poor visibility. So we had to know the area really well beforehand. “
“We also had to know how to play with the palm fountain, which was new to us. And with such strong streams of water soaring 100 meters high, we really had to be prepared. “
Llorens had discussed and practiced tricks and choreography together with his athlete and friend Goberna some time before his arrival in Dubai. In the emirate, the duo and the entire project team carried out test runs in daylight for two days in the Margham Desert.
Paragliding with a paramotor is a complicated process and requires skill, patience, and very, very precise planning, including the need to adapt to the location where they are. “During the training we tested the parameters, the gliders and the brakes,” continues Llorens. “Rafael [Goberna] had a little problem with his engine. “
Goberna explains: “The engine did not fly very well because it was last used at high altitude in Europe before arriving in Dubai. So I had to adjust the carburetor in the air in the engine. “
“During the first practice flight over the water, I broke a propeller. I really couldn’t understand what was going on. And then another broke. After all, a backup engine was required. “
The entire team refused to give up and worked tirelessly to be “well ready” for the filming of the film. “It was super nice for us to be finished for us in this way – the process was definitely a challenge from the start,” Goberna concludes. “After a long journey, the result was wonderful. The team worked incredibly hard to make it happen.
“The highlight for me was playing between the super shooters with Rafael, because we’ve never done that before. It felt really new and very powerful – with the water coming extremely high to our sides. “
Goberna adds: “You feel the air rise with the water – and the water splashes against your face because it is so strong. It was a nice experience. “
