The majority of Indian domestic workers work seven days a week with no annual leave.


The largest survey of domestic workers ever conducted in India has provided unprecedented insight into the working conditions of one of the most depressed sectors in the country.

The survey shows that in six northeastern Indian states, a large majority of maids, cooks and other domestic workers worked seven days a week and did not get a single day of annual leave without their wages docked.

Over four years of field research and surveys of 12,000 domestic workers, a report first seen by The independent one is not only the largest single study of the sector in India, but in fact anywhere in the world.
