The reward is US $ 200,000 for a mugger who shot and killed a 6-year-old boy because his mother dropped him

Orange County authorities are now offering a $ 200,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of a gunman who killed a 6-year-old boy in a road traffic incident.

The boy, Aiden Leos, was shot dead on Freeway 55 in Orange last week.

The victim’s family initially offered a $ 50,000 reward before Don Wagner, Orange County’s regulatory agency, approved an additional $ 50,000 to be added to their reward by the district’s regulatory agency.

According to local broadcaster KTLA, supervisor Katrina Foley compared the $ 50,000 with her own $ 50,000 for a grand total of $ 150,000.

“I hope this adds 150,000 reasons to encourage the public to send in tips and information that may lead directly to the arrest of those involved in Aiden’s death,” Ms. Foley said in a statement.

Later, an additional donor added another $ 50,000 to the pot and increased the reward to the current level.

The child was killed last Friday while being driven to kindergarten by his mother, Joanna Cloonan.

Ms. Cloonan recalled a vehicle she may remember as a white Volkswagen station wagon that she had cut off in the car pool lane on Freeway 55. According to family members, Ms. Cloonan made a gesture on the car to cut it off.

“When I started walking away from them, I heard a very loud noise,” she told ABC News. “And my son said ‘Ow’ and I had to drive by. And he was shot.”

Ms. Cloonan called 911 as soon as she found out that her son had been shot.

The boy was taken to hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

“He was beautiful and he was kind and he was precious and you killed him for no reason,” said Ms. Cloonan. “I want to find her and I want my son to be given justice.”

Mourners have erected a makeshift memorial to the child on the shoulder of the highway near where he died.

Visitors left cards, balloons, toys and lit candles to remember the child.

The California Highway Patrol has asked anyone found in the shooting area between 7:15 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. on May 21st to check their dashcam or cell phone videos for any information that could help them identify a suspect .

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family to raise funds for the reward. It has already reached USD 225,000.
