According to a joint statement by several U.S. authorities on Tuesday, the Russians were likely to have lagged behind the SolarWinds hack that breached the U.S. government’s networks.
So far, the violation appeared to have been Russian, according to Reuters, which first reported on it in December, but this is the first time the government has publicly endorsed it. President Trump said on December 19 that he had been informed of the hack but suggested that he did not believe it was Russia and that it “could be China”.
“”This work shows that an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor, likely of Russian origin, is responsible for most or all recently discovered persistent cyber compromises by both government and non-government networks, “the joint said Declaration It is believed that the attack by Russia was aimed at gathering intelligence.
The joint statement was made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Agency for Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security, the Office of the Director of the National Intelligence Service and the National Security Agency.
Other people have suggested that Russia was behind the attack. In December, former Trump Homeland Security adviser Thomas Bossert said in an article for the New York Times that Russians were likely to have been on sensitive government networks for six to nine months.
Reuters said last month that SolarWinds software gave hackers access to the US commercial and finance departments. The New York Times added that the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department and parts of the Pentagon were also injured. Microsoft said it was also a victim of the attacks and that hackers accessed some of its source code.
SolarWinds, based in Austin, Texas, offers a variety of tools that businesses can use to manage their software. Competitors include BMC, CA, Cisco and IBM. The company has over 300,000 customers and the US government is a significant part of its customer base.
