Noah Green, the man who was identified by law enforcement officers yesterday as responsible for the attack on the U.S. Capitol, believed the federal government was controlling his mind and said he recently lost his job due to mental health problems.
Mr Green crashed his vehicle into a barricade outside the Capitol at 1:00 p.m. Friday before attacking police officers with a knife.
He was fatally shot by the police. Capitol Police officer William Evans died in hospital half an hour after the attack.
DC Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Contee III said Mr. Green’s attack was not “terrorist”.
Who Was Noah Green?
Mr. Green was previously unknown to the police, Sky News reported.
The 25-year-old from Indiana recently posted on social media saying he had lost his job and was suffering from medical conditions.
He was born in Fairlea, West Virginia and graduated from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in finance in 2019, CNN reported.
He had been an avid American football player on the Christopher Newport University team before becoming very religious and becoming paranoid.
He became a devoted supporter of the Nation of Islam and his family had been concerned about his state of mind in recent years, the Washington Post reported.
It was said that he accused teammates and roommates of drugging him with Xanax in 2019, which one teammate deemed untrue.
Mr. Green’s brother Brendan said he was critically ill at the shared apartment in Virginia on Thursday evening before leaving and sending worrying messages later that night.
According to the Washington Post, Mr. Green wrote to his brother Brendan, “I’m sorry, but I’ll just go and live and be homeless… Thank you for all you’ve done. I looked up to you when I was a kid. You inspired me a lot. “
He also posted on social media in the lead up to the attack. CNN reported that he posted on Instagram that the federal government was targeting him with “mind control”. He recently posted an Instagram video titled “The US Government Is Black’s No. 1 Enemy!”
Mr Green had lived at Newport News, where his brother Brendan said he had suffered from health problems including hallucinations, palpitations, headaches and thoughts of suicide.
Then he moved to Indianapolis and told his brother that the drugs had inspired him to go there. He later told Brendan Green that people were trying to break into his home, the Washington Post reported.
A few months ago, Mr Green flew to Botswana, where he told his brother that he had tried to jump in front of a car. His brother said he was so badly injured that he would be operated on in a hospital.
Two weeks ago he moved in with Brendan Green and told him he was in a really bad situation and “in really bad shape”.
On his Facebook page, Mr. Green wrote on March 17th, “The past few years have been tough and the past months tough. I’ve been tried some of the greatest, most unimaginable tests of my life. I am currently unemployed having quit my job partly due to my ailments but ultimately looking for a spiritual journey. “
He also wrote of his devotion to the leader of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan, whom he identified as “Jesus the Messiah”.
Nation of Islam is an African American religious organization that identifies itself as a form of Islam, but has different beliefs than current Islamic traditions. It was founded in the 1930s and popularized in the 1960s thanks to high profile members like Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X.
The March 17th Facebook post, which has since been removed along with Mr. Green’s other social media accounts, states that he regards Mr. Farrakhan as his “spiritual father”.
Mr Green wrote, “Without his guidance, word, and teachings that I picked up along the way, I would not have been able to continue.”
On the same day, Mr. Green also posted links to videos of Mr. Farrakhan’s speeches, including one titled “The Divine Destruction of America” and a picture of a certificate acknowledging a gift he gave to the Nation of Islam for US 1,085 -Dollars had made.
Mr Green’s Facebook and Instagram accounts went offline on Friday afternoon after the attack.
